What to do if my cat's hair falls out

Long haired cat

Cats with hair are adorable stuffed animals, but especially in the molting season or if we live in an area where the climate is warm, they leave traces all over the place every day, so we have no choice but to roll the fluff remover and the vacuum cleaner to keep the house clean. But also, it must be taken into account that it does not always leave traces due to heat, but rather I could have something much more serious.

To help you, I will explain what to do if my cat's hair falls out.

Before we start, let's know when to worry. Well, as we said, it is normal for cats with hair to leave remains around the house, but if we see it that it scratches more often, if it starts to fall more, and if the animal is not in the same mood, then we have to find the source of his discomfort so that both he and his fur will go back to being the same.

Why is my cat's hair falling out?

Cats lose hair

In addition to shedding, there are two causes for hair loss, and they are the following:

Management

If the cat begins to scratch very often, even producing bald spots, and if it also has other symptoms such as apathy, loss of appetite, and / or sadness, it is likely that it is sick and needs veterinary help. You have to think that this is an animal that is not going to show itself weak at first, because that is not something that is in its nature; so Any small and seemingly insignificant detail can be a symptom.

Parasites

Both ticks and fleas, and others such as mites, are parasites that cause a lot of itching. If left unchecked, the cat could eventually lose a lot of hair every time it scratches itself. In addition, we also have to mention the allergy from bites, which causes redness and intense itching of the skin.

Stress

In the case of stress, we will have to be patient, treat it with respect and, above all, be calm. The cat can often feel very stressed if its routine changes, whether due to a move or the loss of a loved one. But there is nothing that a few sessions of pampering and games with your human so that, little by little, you will feel better. Of course, if the weeks go by and it remains the same, do not hesitate to ask a feline ethologist for help.

My cat loses hair in areas

When the cat loses hair in areas we should suspect that it has parasites, such as fleas o ticks. These are parasites that are especially concentrated at the base of the tail and on the head, so it is highly recommended to examine it first in those areas of the body.

If we see any, we will treat the feline with an antiparasitic, As the pipettes, which are like plastic bottles which contain the insecticide liquid. This should be applied at the base of the neck, right in the center, or even a little higher on the head in order to prevent it from being licked.

As the hours go by, we will notice that the furry scratches less and less, and the next day it is most likely that it no longer has parasites, or that it has only a few that will die quickly.

My cat loses its hair and has bald patches, is it ringworm?

If, despite receiving the best care, the cat loses hair, it is likely that it has ringworm. Ringworm is a disease caused by fungi, and it is quite frequent in these felines. It is not usually too serious, since the furry's own defense system will be able to fight against microorganisms without many problems, but it is still necessary to take it to the veterinarian since it is a contagious disease: cats and people can be infected if they have a compromised immune system.

How to avoid hair loss in cats?

Orange cat

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to prevent hair loss. All of us who have must deal with it. And it is completely natural for hair to die and, when doing so, it falls out, especially during the summer. Why? Well the answer is that the higher the temperatures, the less hair we need 😉.

Now, can you do something so that you don't drop it so much? Yes, of course: take care of it correctly. You have to avoid stress, give them a diet according to their needs (or what is the same, rich in animal protein and without cereals), and brush it daily.

Tips to better manage the shedding of the cat

During the spring and summer the cat will lose a lot of hair. It can get so hot in those seasons that the winter hair falls out, leaving the summer hair, which is finer. But of course, when doing so it leaves a trace all over it: floor, furniture, rugs, ... What to do?

Brush it daily

It's the basics. If we brush it daily we will prevent it from leaving so much trace around the house. For this, it is highly recommended to use the Furminator (for sale No products found. for short hair, and No products found. for long hair), which removes much of the dead hair.

Pass the mop (and not the broom)

When living with cats with hair, the ideal is to mop, since this more dirt traps. The broom is practical for small rooms for example, but it does not turn out to be as effective.

Protect furniture

The animal likes to climb on furniture and rest on the sofa for example. During the molting season it can be a problem, but better cleaning can be done by protecting them with special fabrics that are easy to wash.

I hope it has been useful to you 🙂.

My cat has a lot of hair loss but it does not present bald spots, it is not stressed, we give it cat food neuter it with good nutrient, it is fed every day because it loves it, it bathes once a month and we give it a vitamin supplement but nothing, of course it is already an adult cat
    thank you

      Hi Claudia.
It is possible that the food is responsible. The most advisable thing is to give him a feed that does not contain cereals (soy, corn, rice, or others), such as Applaws, Taste of the Wild, Acana, Orijen.
It should also be brushed daily to remove dead hair.
If it still doesn't improve, a vet should see if he has any allergies.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Leslie.
You may have dermatitis or scabies, if you scratch a lot.
It is best to take him to the vet for examination.
      A greeting.

      Hi Nelida.
It is very important that a veterinarian see him, especially considering that he has been bad for a long time.
      I am not a veterinarian.
      I hope he recovers soon.
      Cheer up.

      Hello Julian.
There could be several causes: inappropriate food, stress, allergy ... To rule out, I would recommend giving you a feed that does not contain cereals (wheat, corn, oats, rice), such as Acana, Orijen, Applaws, Taste of the Wild.
And if you still do not see improvement, then it is best to take him to the vet to see what happens.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Yarledy.
It probably has parasites. I recommend you take him to the vet to give you a suitable antiparasitic.

Hi! We found my kitten on the street, we have had her for a month and she came with an eye infection for about 2 weeks, she healed but now her hair is fading and she already has several hairs all over her body

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Monserrat.
Have you checked for fleas or ticks? That may be it, but I still recommend taking her to the vet for examination.
      A greeting.

Hello, my kitten has just given birth to 6 kittens, I think it was premature labor and they all died as a result of that, she was left skinny and scratches too much to the point of drawing blood and leaving parts of skin falling out, all her hair, I need help. give it back

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Armando.
The first thing I would advise you to take her to the vet to give her a cream or some medicine to heal her skin.
At home you have to give her a lot of love, be with her. Cats can have a pretty bad time after a loss, and right now your cat needs you.
Give him cat treats or wet food from time to time. You will surely like it and it will make you feel better.
      Cheer up.

Today in the morning I noticed that my cat has a bald hair one space on the side of his spine and he always looks big ITO

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Alex.
I recommend you take him to the vet. It may just have parasites (fleas), but it can be something more serious.
      Greetings and encouragement.

Hello, about 4 days ago I realized that my 3-year-old cat is losing its hair almost reaching its tail, it is being peeled, it eats well, we give it away a lot. When he was 7 months old, he was neutered, but he still likes to go out, and when he does, everything comes back! Is it necessary that I take him to the vet because of his hair loss? Does he have me a little scared?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Camila.
Look to see if it has fleas (you will see how little black dots that move). Brush the hair in that area in the opposite direction to its growth, so you can see your skin better. If it has those little spots, it will be enough for you to buy an antiparasitic.
If he doesn't have anything, then I would recommend taking him to the vet, just in case.
      A greeting.

Hello, I am somewhat scared about this issue, because I am not sure what happens with my kitten's hair.
Maybe a few weeks ago, I began to see that the part of his stomach had fallen a lot of hair, he had, but it was very short, days later, I saw that he had some holes in his back legs, I have also noting that he licks constantly. We are almost in winter, I do not know if that has to do with something with the shedding of hair. An answer would help me a lot.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Victoria.
Hair loss can be caused by stress, allergies, or parasites. The first thing I would recommend is to put an antiparasitic that eliminates fleas, ticks and mites. If he doesn't stop scratching, the food may be making him feel bad. What kind of feed do you give it?
It is important to give one that does not have cereals, such as Acana, Orijen, Applaws, Taste of the wild, or True Instinct High Meat for example. It is more expensive, but it is healthier.

It would also be necessary to see if he has stress. For that, I advise you to read this article.

      Greetings, and encouragement.

hello, at first my cat looked like it had scratched with something in its whiskers and it looked a little red, over time it became more and more red, until now it no longer has any hair in that area , his wound is getting bigger and bigger, I don't know if it's scabies or an allergy

My cat is small, he is 5 months old and recently he ran away from home for 1 day, he is well fed and has many toys, we play with him every day, he is aggressive.
    please help!

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Maria Ignacia.
I recommend you take him to the vet (I am not).
It may be that you have scabies, or that you simply have other parasites, but it is best seen by a professional.
      A greeting.
