Tips for living with an aggressive cat

Angry cat

When we decide to adopt a cat we have to keep in mind that it is not a dog. It may seem obvious, but the reality is that many times we can expect the feline to behave in a similar way to the dog, something that most of the time it will not happen. And it is that, the character that one has is very different from that of the other, and therefore, the way of educating and treating it will also be different.

Thus, if a person does not treat their feline properly, the most likely thing is that the animal breaks the relationship, being able to show itself in a way that we will not like. For this reason, I am going to give you a few tips for living with an aggressive cat.

There are no dangerous cats

Angry adult cat

This is the first thing you have to keep in mind. In the same way that there are no dangerous dogs, there are no cats that want to harm people. What can happen, just as it can happen to any of us, is that at some point they are aggressive to defend themselves.

But also, you have to know that the treatment and education you receive will directly influence your character. So they should never be abused, that is, they should never be hit, yelled at or ignored (yes, neglecting the cat, even if it is indoors, is also abuse).

Find the source of the problem

When we have a problem, what we do is look for the origin to try to solve it. With cats that do not live happily we have to do exactly the same. And why can they be aggressive? For many reasons, the main ones being the following:

  • Arrival of a new household member: cats are very territorial. When the family grows, it is very important that the introductions are made correctly, that is, keeping the animals apart for a few days and exchanging their beds, letting the baby approach the baby in the presence of an adult and making the same case to all the members of the family. the family.
  • StressThese animals have very little tolerance to stress. If you live in a tense environment, or if you are moving or re-decorating your home, try to stay calm. Something that helps a lot to calm down (both people and cats) is playing classical music. In addition, we must avoid turning the volume high, otherwise it will cause enormous discomfort to the cat, which has a much more developed sense of hearing than ours (it is able to hear the sound of a mouse from 7 meters away) .
  • Accident or illness: if they feel pain in any part of their body, or if they are sick, they may react badly when touched. For this reason, we must go to the vet as soon as possible so that they can give them a treatment that allows them to regain their health.

Help your cat

In addition to everything we have already said, it is very important to help the cats that we have at home. How do you do that? With patience, with respect and with affection. We have to avoid victimizations and, also, selfishness ("He does this because he wants to punish me", or comments like that). They will not be of any use to us, in addition to the fact that the psychology of the cat is a little different from the human one, therefore, they should not be humanized. If our furry animals are aggressive, they will do it to attract attention, so that their family can take the necessary measures so that they can be happy again..

Unfortunately, they do not know how to speak like us, so if they scratch, bite us and / or chase us, we have to ask ourselves why, and not assume that they do it to hurt us. The behavior of adult cats is the result of the education they have received as a youngster. If we let the kittens misbehave, as they grow up they will hurt us more because they will have more strength. For this reason, we must teach them to not bite and do not scratch.

If we have adopted them as adults, we can still teach them that there are things they cannot do. Always with patience and affection, never forcing them. In the event that time passes or we have many doubts about how to help them, we will consult with a feline ethologist.
