Food
The Maine Coon, like other cats, is a carnivorous animal, which means that your diet has to be meat-based. Therefore, it is essential that it be given either homemade food (following the indications of a feline nutritionist) or a feed that does not contain cereals or by-products. The cost is higher, but think that it is always going to be better to spend the money on quality food than on veterinarians.
In addition, avoid giving him too much food. This breed loves to eat, but being rather calm it has a tendency to gain weight. To avoid this, he must be given his food only and exclusively, three or four times a day. Of course, clean and fresh water must be left freely available.
Hygiene
Although it is a very clean furry, from time to time it will be necessary to make sure that both its eyes, its ears, its mouth and its hair are as they should be: clean and healthy. How do you do that? In this way:
- Eyes: with a gauze moistened in an infusion of chamomile (that is warm) clean the eyes using one for each, twice a week.
- Ears: with a specific eye drops -which should be recommended by the veterinarian- these parts of his body must be carefully cleaned. Use clean gauze for each one, cleaning only the outermost part of the ear once or twice a week.
- Boca: with a toothbrush and a special toothpaste for cats that you will find in pet stores, you can clean their teeth at least three times a week.
- Hair: daily you should brush her precious hair with a card or a comb. When finished, I advise you to pass the Furminator to finish removing dead hair.
Can you bathe?
I do not advise it. The cat is an animal that no need to bathe since he is in charge of cleaning himself. Only if it is really dirty, you could, using a cat shampoo.
