The cat, a feline animal
We don't always think about it, but the cat is a feline, just like the lion, the tiger or the panther. They are all predators, who hunt for food. What is rarely deduced is that they get much of the water they need by feeding on their prey, and is that these furry are very little drinkers. Obviously, they go to the rivers and puddles to drink, but little.
When the cat comes to live with us, its diet changes: it will no longer be able to hunt, in fact, it will not have to. We give him food every day, which may have everything he needs but is often missing the most important thing: water. Why do you drink tap water?
The main reason is because it is a water that is not stagnant. Unlike the one in the drinker, the one that comes out of the tap is a clean, fresh liquid. Therefore, when we open it, he often walks up to it and takes a few drinks to satisfy himself. However, this is not the only cause.
A drinking fountain that is dirty, even with only a speck of dust, will be a drinking fountain that the cat will not use.. Keep in mind that this is a very demanding animal when it comes to cleaning, both with its own and with its crockery and litter box, so if we don't keep its drinking bowl perfectly clean, let's forget about it drinking from it.
How to prevent it from doing so?
Well, it cannot be avoided 100%, but we can do some things so that you are well hydrated and, incidentally, that your health cannot be compromised now or later. Is the next:
- Give him wet food instead of dry: as it has 70% humidity, you will also drink water while you eat and, therefore, you will not have as much need to drink.
- Clean the drinker daily: with a drop of dishwasher and a valleta (or with a scouring pad if the water coming out of the tap has limescale on it), it is thoroughly cleaned. Then all the foam is removed and it dries well, then it is refilled.
