Why does my cat climb on top of my legs?

Cat on top of a person

Has it ever happened to you that you were working on the computer or watching television and suddenly you noticed that your cat had climbed on you? This is a behavior very typical of this furry, which makes us undoubtedly love it even more.

But Why does my cat climb on top of my legs? What are you looking for or want? Let's find out 🙂.

Paws of a cat

El body language of a cat is highly developed: with its different meows, the different positions that its body can adopt, and even its movements can tell us a lot about how it feels or what it wants at that moment. When he sees us for example that we are sitting working with the computer, he will approach us asking for our attention. How will do? Well, he can try it first from the ground, rubbing against our legs and meowing, but if he still doesn't get what he wants, then he will climb on top of us.

In doing so, he knows that we will not be able to resist stroking him. Even though we have a lot of work to do, we always find time to pamper him. And this he knows well, so we will see that he will repeat these actions day after day. But, Why does he do this?

Why do you climb up and rub against your legs?

There can be several reasons why the furry gets on our lap:

Look for darling

If he is especially affectionate, purring, and melting with each touch, it will be because he needed to feel loved and accompanied. To the cat, even if it seems like not, if he likes to be with humans and if he is also affectionate himself, he will need human physical contact, that is to say, he will need his two-legged family (that is, two legs 🙂) to touch him, pamper him, make him feel like what he is or should be: the cat king or queen of the house.

Look for company

He can behave in the same way as if he is looking for affection, lying down and letting us pamper him. Equally, the cat that looks for affection usually also looks for company: both things usually go hand in hand. If it is also a feline that spends a lot of time alone, or when it has been living without its favorite person for a while, or if the family works a lot -even from home- and has not paid much attention to it, it will approach her rubbing against the legs.

Search for food

If he lets us pet him but immediately gets down and meows at us, he might be hungry. And if it is a cat that we give something that he loves every day at the same time (or more or less at the same time, such as a tin for cats, it will also rub against the legs for a moment to ask us to we give it. Besides, it will also give us a very sweet face that we will not be able to ignore 😉.

Is feeling unwell / asks for help

While it is very rare for a cat that feels weak or in pain to ask its human for help in this way, we cannot and should not rule out anything. If we suspect that he is ill, we will take him to the vet as soon as possible.

My cat climbs on top of me, why?

The cat needs affection

There are several reasons why the cat climbs onto our lap, but they can all be summarized in one: seek attention… By us or by other animals in the house. In the first case, we will see that it snuggles up quietly, letting us caress it and enjoy its purr.

In the second, it could be somewhat restless, making few but rapid movements with its tail, with its eyes open and attentive to the animal that is nearby (it does not necessarily have to be in front of it; remember that the sense of smell and hearing of the feline they are much more developed than ours so that they can know where another furry is even if it is several meters away).

Is there something we have to do? Well, if you just want pampering we will give it to you 🙂, but if you are restless or vigilant, the best we can do is find out where that other animal is and then assess the situation:

  • They are playing?: cats often play with each other. They chase each other, hide, stalk ... Sometimes they are somewhat gross, but they never get seriously injured (maybe a slight scratch does get carried away) nor do they have the need to scream loudly because a simple snort is usually more than enough to calm down.
  • Are they harassing each other ?: Bullying is a common problem in cats that have been forced to share their life and home with stronger and more confident cats. The strong cat will chase the weak, thereby making the weak begin to eat quickly and with some fear, to relieve themselves off the tray, and to isolate themselves, constantly seeking shelter.
In these situations, it is urgent to ask for help from an ethologist or feline therapist so that coexistence can be good for everyone again.

And your cat, why is it climbing on top of you? 🙂

      Hi Katty.
You probably have a problem with your eyes. It is best to see a vet.

Because it will be that my cat whenever he sees me getting ready to go out in automatic, he always does the same thing, he tries to get on me so that I can load it and load it, a few minutes, I lower it and again: / 5 days ago I happened that I jump from the bed and by not catching well I scratch myself.

Very often it is on my legs and it follows me and sometimes if it does that of getting on my pants so that it can carry it but when it sees me getting ready to go out it becomes too insistent, I try to lower it and it grabs my clothes with its nails, this last time I better choose to close the door while I was getting ready because if she doesn't let me

      Hello Elena.
There are cats that become very dependent on us.
To help them be calmer, you have to play a lot with them (the ideal is 1 hour divided into several sessions a day), with cat rods, balls, or any other toy designed for them. In this way, they will be more tired and therefore also calmer.
      A greeting.

How can I get my cat to climb on top of me? He is very affectionate, but he doesn't let me pick him up or climb on top of me ... My previous kitten did, and I haven't done anything different with him ... I don't know, he misses me a lot. Can you help me or give me any advice? Thanks!! All the best!! ?

      Hi carmen.

There are cats ... and cats. Each one has its own character.

One of my cats, for example, does not allow herself to be picked up, but instead she does climb onto the lap. You have to respect them.

You can offer food but leaving the hand that holds it on the legs, to "force" him to get on. But in the end it will end up going up when it wants lol 🙂

      Regards!
