When and how to reward a cat

Cat playing with feather duster

You want your cat. You pamper him daily, making sure he has everything he needs (maybe more) and that he is happy. But do you know when and how to really reward a cat? No, the correct answer is not "always", as much as it may surprise you 😉.

Like his family, you should take care of him as he deserves, but giving him prizes constantly is not good since he could turn into a rude feline who will always want to get what he wants, and who could get angry if he does not. Then, When is the best time?

When to give prizes / rewards?

The cat is a very intelligent animal that spends a good part of the day observing us. Over time, he knows well when we are most receptive, that is, when he can ask us for attention knowing in advance that he will get it, and when we are less so. So, It is important that we are clear about the moments in which we will reward you and when not. So, for example, what I do is give them prizes and rewards only in these situations:

  • When there has been a moment of stress (parties, celebrations, or any other type of event at home), so that they forget about it and can be calm again.
  • When they are very relaxed in bed or on the couch.
  • When should I stop a game that becomes too rough (First I make noise to distract them, and a couple of minutes I give them an award).

What types of prizes / rewards are there?

There are of several types: wet food, snacks, toys, caresses. Depending on the situation, you have to choose one or the other: for example, to calm them down after the moment of stress, you can give them snacks; to give them a treat when they are calm, a few caresses and cuddles; and after having allowed a few minutes to pass after a rough game, wet food for the two "warriors".
