Can two cats use the same litter box?

Cat in the sandbox

Living with a cat is one of the most beautiful experiences we can have: it is affectionate, fun… and very clean; in fact, this is a very interesting factor that leads many people to adopt a feline.

He makes himself loved so much that often what was to be the only four-legged member of the family ceases to be with the arrival of a second furry. It is then that the question arises as to whether two cats can use the same litter box. Read on to know the answer.

How many litter boxes per cat?

Cats are very territorial animals. Even if you get along very well with your partner, you won't be too happy to share a single litter tray, since in addition to that discomfort, you will not like the bad smells that emanate from your private bathrooms.

Therefore, the ideal is to always have one box for each cat plus one; that is, if we have two cats, we must have three boxes.

What type of cat litter box to choose?

In pet stores we will find three different types of litter boxes for cats:

  • Capless: they are the cheapest, but also the ones that leave the most bad smells and dirt free. Even so, they are ideal for kittens who are learning to use them and for very old cats.
  • With cap: they are somewhat more expensive, but they guarantee the privacy of the cat, and they are also much cleaner. As if that were not enough, they can be had with the door removed or on.
  • Automatic: if you do not have much time to clean, the automatic cat litter box is an interesting option since they allow you to program them to do up to four cleanings per day or each time the cat uses them.

Regardless of which one we buy, it is important that the size is correct: The tray may now be too large for kittens, but when they grow up it may be small. Animals must be able to fit well in it.

What is the best cat litter?

There are several types of litter: clumping, non-clumping, scented, odorless ... As each cat is different, the best thing to do is to try. Especially in online pet stores they usually sell sample packs at very cheap prices that will help us to find out which one our furry dogs prefer.

I have 4 cats and two large litter trays; there have never been conflicts between them over using them. I slime them twice a day. This formula of the number of cats + 1 is very relative and in practice very few people follow it and have never had problems. The important thing is to use quality sand and keep it clean.
