Now that we know that food is toxic to our cat and that we strive to keep chemicals and insecticides out of reach, we must not forget the plants that are harmful to our pet. In spring and summer, cats love to play and peck the plants in our house or garden, due to your need to purge to get rid of hairballs that they ingest at preening with your tongue every day.
If we live in a flat, the cat will taste any green plant that is within reach, it is a necessity, therefore we must be alert since many indoor plants are irritating or toxic and they can cause gastrointestinal problems, with vomiting, diarrhea and even be the cause of death. If we live in the countryside things change, because cats (with some exceptions) know how to discern the plants that best suit them, yet it is worth being well documented on the subject.
The most common toxic plants (although the list is very long) that we can find in a house or garden are the Potos, the Dieffembachia, the Brazilian trunk, the ferns, the Holly, Oleander, Amaryllis, Cyclamen, Clivia miniata, Croton, Poinsettia, Ivy, Hydrangea, Hyacinth, Marijuana, Narcissus, Castor bean, Azalea, Tulip and Lilies that can be deadly.
As an alternative to toxic plants we can put grasses to germinate, pots with germinated 'cat grass' Or put pots of "Ribbons" (Chloris Chloris), these plants love them and are good for cats, so they will forget to gossip and try others that are dangerous.
