There are some who are more shy and yes they will look for a place where they can be calm, but there are others who will not care. My advice is that you first use an old bowl that you no longer need as a sandbox, to see if he likes it or not, and if in the end you see that he does not relieve himself in it or does not feel comfortable, get a sandbox with top.
Put it in a quiet place
The litter box should be placed in a corner where the family does not have much life, far from where the cat sleeps. There are those who choose to have it in the bathroom, where the bad smell is also controlled (although you should also know that there are sands that reduce bad odors, such as silica or bentonite).
