How to tame a wild cat

Feral cat

Today it is easy to find not one, but many cats living on the street. These animals, although they are used to living on the margins of human civilization, if they have never had a bad experience with us they could come to accept our company.

Therefore, we are going to explain how to tame a wild cat. This way, it will be much easier for you to have a relationship with him that, as I anticipate, will be very special.

What is a wild cat?

A wild cat is that cat that has never had direct contact with humans; that is, he was born and raised on the street. In general, it is easy to distinguish him from the one who once had a human family, because as soon as he sees you approach him he runs to hide. However, with a lot of patience, a lot of body language and a lot of rewards, you can get him to trust you.

How to approach him?

With a slow step, and without looking directly into his eyes. You must bear in mind that every living being, including human beings, has our own personal space in which we feel good, comfortable and safe. When someone we don't know gets too close to us, what we do is move away. And that is precisely what the cat is going to do.

Therefore, we have to use body language. Squinting at him, getting closer to him little by little, and stopping if he becomes uncomfortable (that is, if he is about to leave, or if he snorts or growls at us) are gestures that will help him understand that we do not want to hurt him. It is also highly recommended to bring cans of wet feed to fill a feeder, since then there will come a time when the desire to eat will overcome fear.

Do it like this for as long as it takes, getting a little closer each time. There will come a time when you can get so close that you can caress him on the back, as one who does not want the thing. It is certain that you will be surprised at first, and that you may even be scared, but it will pass 😉.

When you see that he is the one who approaches you, then you will have achieved your goal.

Can you live in a house?

Feral cat

Not recommended. A wild cat is used to living on the street. It is and wants to remain free in that sense. Only if he is very meek could one try to take him home to live with a human family, but he would always have to have access to the outside.

There are cats that do not want to know anything about humans, and you have to respect them. But there are others who, little by little, can be taught that not all people are bad, and that they can trust us.
