How to tell if a cat has been spayed

Sterilized cat

Sterilization in cats and cats is a surgical operation that is helping animals a lot, since they no longer have heat, they do not have that urgent need to go out in search of a partner. What's more, they become calmer and more sedentary, thus spending more time with his family. And this not to mention that we do not have to worry about unwanted litters, many of which, by the way, unfortunately have very little chance of finding a home.

But of course, How can I know if my cat has been spayed if I have just adopted it?

Physical signs in the cat

If your feline friend is a male, you can tell if he is spayed by doing the following:

  • With latex gloves on, hold him in such a way that your arms are under his body, and its hind legs are placed on your arm.
  • Now remove fur from genital area, which is right next to the anus.
  • Check his testicles. If it is sterilized, you will only feel the testicular sac; Otherwise, you will notice as if there was a »ball» -the testicle- inside it. However, this is not a 100% reliable remedy, since your cat may be too young or suffer from cryptorchidism, which is a condition in which the testicles do not descend.
  • Measure the extent between the anus and the penis. This, if it is sterilized, should measure a little more than 2cm if the cat is adult, or 5cm if it is young.

Physical signs in the cat

If your new friend is a female, you will be able to tell if she is spayed by doing this:

  • Take a moment when she is lying on her back to check your abdomen. If you have recently been sterilized, your abdomen will be shaved.
  • Then, look for the scar sterilization. To do this, remove the hair from the lower part of his abdomen, so that you can see the skin. When you can finally do this, look for a scar, which will be a thin, straight line.
  • You can also look for tattoo marks on your abdomen. Veterinarians don't always make them, but it doesn't hurt to look for them.

Siamese cat

A very common practice among veterinary professionals after sterilizing both cats and queens, is the ear cut. This cut is made at the tip of it, and approximately 6 millimeters. It is done when the animal is still under the effects of anesthesia, so it does not feel pain. Plus, it heals quickly.

If you still have doubts, take him to the vet for you to confirm.

Congratulations on the new member of the family 🙂.
