All about salmonellosis in cats

Cat diseases

Cats can be affected by different diseases throughout their lives. There are some of them that are well known, such as feline leukemia or PIF, but there are others that are not, such as salmonellosis. This, apart from not knowing each other so much, is atypical, which means that we, without having studied veterinary medicine, have to be very attentive in case any strange symptoms appear.

Therefore, in Noti Gatos we are going to tell you all about salmonellosis in cats: its symptoms, its treatment and more to make it easier for you to identify it.

What is it?

Salmonellosis is a food poisoning caused by bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family. These are found in the intestinal tract of both four-legged and two-legged animals; However, it must be borne in mind that it is not very common in cats ... but an infected feline could infect humans, which makes it a problem that needs to be treated even more urgently if possible.

How are cats infected?

Cats can end up with salmonellosis if they eat infected meat from poultry, cattle and pigs, fruits and vegetables or if they drink water from rivers or puddles. They could also become infected if they eat processed foods or if they have been exposed to unsanitary conditions.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms appear between 12 hours and 3 days after infection, and they are:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea with or without blood
  • Chronic intermittent diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Apathy
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Shock
  • Abdominal pain

How is the diagnosis and treatment done?

Since symptoms are common to other diseases, what will be done to the cat is examine it, a fecal cytology, PCR and a culture. While waiting for the results, and once the diagnosis is confirmed, you will be given antibiotics, in addition to other medications that will relieve symptoms (anti-inflammatory, probiotics, antipyretics, etc.).

Can it be prevented?

Of course. The best way is to avoid giving him raw food.. If we want to give it a diet as natural as possible, we recommend at least cooking the meat and fish before offering it, or choose to give it the Yum Diet for cats (it looks like minced meat, but it also has a little vegetables).

Another option is to provide high-quality (grain-free) wet cat food, such as Applaws cans or Alpha Spirit cans.

Hello, good morning, my question is, I always feed the kittens on the street, but I put them outside my door, but a neighbor has already taken photos where I put them, that's normal or not, I live in Cascante Navarra. As I almost tone the kittens who come to eat, something unusual happened to me at night a kitten came with her baby and I left him next to my car we took him to revive him why he was not crying and it was too cold and the little boy was frozen but thank God he survived and after a while he brought another and then another, the 2 survived and one died because the cat left her young at the door of my house. If you could help me with these two questions. Thanks.

      Hi Georgina.
He must have thought he was leaving them in a safe place. And he was not wrong 🙂
When we pet a cat or it rubs against us, it leaves us with its body odor. This smell our nose is unable to feel it, but other cats can. So, if you feel that smell in an area, you will be curious to go see, especially if you have already seen others of its kind prowling the area.
      A greeting.
