Sometimes it happens that we come across a group of stray cats that are living in an area that is not safe for them. Either because many cars pass by, they are in a troubled neighborhood or in an area where there are people who are dedicated to poisoning them, these furry ones may need extra help to be able to get ahead.
If you see yourself in this situation, follow our advice so you can move a feline colony without causing you much stress.
Observe the colony
Before you start looking for a suitable site, it is very important to know how many feline members make up the colony, how many of them are wild and how many are social. Cats establish strong bonds with their companions, even those who are not especially friendly do not like to stray too far from the group.
If you are going to move them, it is convenient that you try to take them all. In this way, they will be able to adapt much better to their new home.
Find a safe site
The cats they need to be in a safe area, away from the streets where there is a lot of traffic, and with places where they can hide and protect themselves from inclement weather. In addition, it is highly recommended that there are no cats already living in that place, since they are very territorial animals, problems could arise.
Move them fast, but calmly
When you have found the right place, you can put cages-traps to collect the cats. Keep in mind that inside the cages they will feel very uncomfortable, so to reduce their discomfort you have to cover them with towels or blankets. Thus, the furry will not see anything and will feel somewhat calmer.
Once captured, must be taken to a totally closed place -You can make a corral for cats or fence a field with a grid- that is very close to the place where they will be released later.
This period of confinement, which lasts for three weeks, is very important to be respected, otherwise the cats could escape when trying to find their old place. To make it easier for them to adapt, it is highly recommended to give them cans of wet feed instead of dry feed, and spend as much time as possible with them.
After that time, you can release them and give them dry feed daily.
Remove food sources from the old location
Now that you have the feline colony safe in its new location, you have to remove the power supplies in the old location. In this way, you will prevent new cats from appearing in that area.
This way you will not only have the feline colony protected, but you will also prevent other cats from going to that conflictive area. 🙂
