My baby cat does not drink water, what do I do?

Cat drinking water

When we have a baby kitten that already begins to eat solid food, at first as minced as possible and later something harder, such as dry feed, one of the things that worries us the most is that it seems to be that it does not like the water. It is difficult to understand why it does not drink, after all, this is the liquid that all living beings need to live, precisely, but the little feline does not want to drink. Why?

If at this time you would like to know why my baby cat does not drink water, and what you can do to make him start to like it, then we will explain everything.

Why don't you drink water?

A baby kitten has to be fed only milk - either from the mother or, if it is an orphan, with milk specifically prepared for kittens - during the first month of life. From the second, bottle feeding must be stopped to give soft foods, such as wet cans for kittens, chicken broth (without bone or skin), Yum Diet for cats that is a natural food for them, or with dry food very soaked in milk -for cats-.

Thus, what can happen to the animal is that it does not want to drink water because it already gets all the moisture it needs from its food. In addition, it must be borne in mind that to date the only liquid he has known is milk, which has a characteristic taste and smell. The water, on the other hand, has no smell or taste, so it is not attractive at all.

What to do to get him to drink water?

In spite of everything, we all know that water is an indispensable food, so we have to be very patient and mix his food from time to time, not with milk, but with water. You may not want to drink at first, but if you are hungry ... you will most likely eat.

Of course, if you do not want to, what you can do is give it a little - without forcing - with a syringe without a needle or with a bottle once or twice a day.

Little kitten

Normally, after two months, he will drink water on his own without problems.

Hello NotiGatos! My question is about the daily amount of water for a puppy and the type of water, and if there is a way to control this. I have a four-month-old kitten, it seems to me that she drinks little water although the vet does not find any health problems with her. How much water should she drink for her age? On the other hand, I have a dilemma about choosing the type of water, at first I decided on bottled water but in practice it is difficult for me, my problem is that I am from Buenos Aires and tap water here is not healthy to drink, in fact I always drink bottled water and I don't want to give tap water to my kitten, but unfortunately she wastes a lot of water, if the water bowl is small she throws it away or leaves the bottom water undrinked and if it is large she "fishes" » the water with the leg and the one made outside... and the truth is that bottled water is expensive, so sometimes I mix them, but in addition to the cost it bothers me that water is wasted in my house whatever its type because of the intrinsic value of this essential element. I have tried three waterers: one normal size (the vet gave it to me, but I think his whiskers bother him) in which he drank more or less, another flatter saucer type, I thought it would be more comfortable for him but he hardly drinks it, and another "gravity" those that you put the bottle in, in this one I think he drinks more although he still leaves a lot of water and ends up getting dirty, also when he fills it he spins around a lot and throws out a lot of water before drinking. I have seen the advertising for the fountains but I am afraid to put water in something electrical since she is very playful and is fascinated by cables. From already thank you very much.

      Hello Mariela.
The best water is rain. Of course, not everywhere we can get it. Therefore, the second most recommended is packaging.
A healthy kitten or cat should drink 50ml for every kg of weight; thus, if you weigh 2kg you should drink 200ml of water a day.
How old is your kitten? I'm telling you because to avoid wasting a lot of water, you could take care of giving them yourself with a syringe without water. It is not advisable, since from two months of age the animal should drink alone, but the syringe may be the solution to your problem.
Another option is to add a little water each time, and until you finish it all, do not add it again.
      A greeting.

My cat does not drink a lot of water, and it is rare that he drinks water, he is already 2 months old or maybe more, the truth is that I cannot say exactly because he is a rescued cat.

The problem is that you tend to drink very little water, but when you urinate, you make too much.

    Is that normal?

Depends. Sometimes what seems to us to be too much is actually not so much. Of course, to know for sure, you would have to give him a fair amount of water and then check how many milliliters of urine there are.
If the cat leads a normal life, in principle there should be nothing to worry about. In any case, to ingest more liquid it is recommended that you eat wet feed, or dry feed soaked with water.
      A greeting.

      Hello Caroline.
Try feeding kitten food. At this age you can already eat soft, solid foods, well chopped.
Anyway, if he doesn't eat, I recommend taking him to the vet.
      A greeting.
