Is it possible the coexistence of two cats at home?

The cat enjoys the company of its kind

When we consider adopting a second furry it is very important that we ask ourselves if the coexistence of two cats at home is possible, since although in general there are no problems, this does not mean that we cannot have them ourselves.

And there are many things that we must take into account before doing something. Therefore, in this article I will give you tips so that you can make the best decision for yourself.

Can two cats live in the same house?

The answer is… depends. And what does it depend on? Well, of all this:

  • Cat's age when separated from the mother: felines that spend their first 2-3 months with their mother are usually more balanced than those that have been weaned early, since their mother has been able to teach them everything they need to know to be calm animals.
On the other hand, it must be borne in mind that the more adults they are, the more difficult it will be to get them to tolerate them.
  • Cat socialization periodIf cats have been in contact with humans and other cats fairly regularly from two to three months of age, they will not have any problems with them in the future.
  • Cat character: there are felines that are very calm and lonely, and there are others that are more nervous and playful. The former will live better being unique cats, the latter will appreciate having a friend to play with.
  • Home: the house and the family that lives in it must be adapted to cats. This means that the felines have to have scratching posts, toys, a room that serves as a shelter, various sandboxes, and of course some people who play with them daily and who care about their health.

How do you get them accepted?

For this you have to have a LOT of patience, and above all be calm and happy. Cats know well how we feel, and not only that, but they also "catch" our feelings very easily. So you have to try to be well, serene, and follow this step by step:

  1. The first thing to do is take the "new" cat to a room where he has food, water, a bed and his litter box. We will put a blanket on the bed, and we will also put one on the "old" cat's.
  2. For the next two or three days, we will exchange the blankets.
  3. On the third or fourth day, we will present them, if possible by previously putting a baby barrier between the two. We will put a delicious meal for each one, and we will ask a relative who lives in the house to caress the "old" cat while we do the same with the "new one. Thus the animals will associate the presence of the other cat with something positive: caresses.
We do this for 5 or 6 days.
  4. From the week on, we remove the barrier and let them lead a normal life. If they snort there is nothing to worry about. We will only intervene if there is really attempted aggression (fixed gaze, bristling hair, growls), but this would not have to happen if we spend time with both cats, playing with them three times a day for 15-20 minutes each time and if we give them darling alike.

Two sleeping cats; it is very possible to have them

Hope it has fit. 🙂
