If we have raised a kitten since it was newborn, surely when it is two months old we will find a quite serious problem. After spending several weeks feeding solely on milk, it is time for her to drink water. But of course, how to convince him?
From experience I can tell you that it is not easy. It is necessary to be very patient and not force him too much, otherwise we could risk that he does not drink anything: neither milk nor water, and that would be very serious. So I'm going to explain to you how to teach a cat to drink water, telling you the steps that I myself followed.
Give him wet food
When the kitten reaches five to six weeks it is very important to start giving it very chopped wet kitten food. At that age, the normal thing is that the bottle does not feed him enough, and in fact, it is more than likely that not only will he drink the milk in seconds but that after a while he will ask for more. Therefore, you have to start introducing food that you hardly have to chew, such as cans, into your diet.
During the first few times it is normal that he does not want to eat, but you have to insist. What worked very well for me was to put a very small piece in his mouth and close it. On his own instinct, he swallowed. I was doing this for several days, and finally, after a week, he started eating on his own. From then on I stopped giving him milk.
Get him used to drinking water
Once the kitten already eats solid food, it is necessary to teach him to drink water. How do you do that? There are several ways:
- Prepare homemade chicken broth (boneless) and mix the liquid with the food.
- Put water to heat -a little, because it has to be simply warm- and add it to the food.
- If you have more cats, put two drinkers in the room where the little one usually eats. So he will learn by imitation.
- An alternative is to play the cat yourself: take a clean glass, fill it with water and put it on the floor. Then drink from it making sure that the furry one sees you.
