How to take care of a cat in summer

Cat sunbathing

With the arrival of summer, our beloved cat modifies his routine a bit to use up even less energy. And the fact is that, even if we have the fan or the air conditioning unit on, as his body is covered with hair - except if he is a hairless race, of course - he can get very hot.

For this reason, it is very important to know how to take care of a cat in summer, especially to avoid heat stroke and dehydration, two too common problems during this season.

Make sure you always have water

Cats should drink water daily

The cat must have clean and fresh water at its free disposal. It is not worth saying "I will change the drinker later". Not. The drinker must always be clean, and filled with equally clean water, without specks of dust or hair, or anything. In addition, it may be necessary to change it between 2 and 3 times a day (a trick to save is to fill bottles with the water that has become dirty that we will later use to water the plants).

In the event that it is not to drink a lot, the ideal will be to buy a fountain type waterer, which we will find for sale in physical and online pet stores.

Give him wet food

The cat in summer does not usually drink much, which is a problem since with the heat it is, it is normal to lose fluids (sweat). Although it is true that this furry only sweats through the pads, it is still very important to ensure that it stays hydrated. Therefore, in addition to having the drinker freely available to you, what we will do is give him cans of grain-free wet food either alone or mixed with his usual feed.

Refresh it with a towel

We take a towel - it can be old - and we moisten it well with cold water. Then we stretch it out on the floor, and we'll see how little it takes our furry to lie down on it to cool off. Although if we prefer, we can take a towel -dry- and wrap a bottle of almost frozen water with it. Either way, I'm sure it'll take a long time to go from there 😉.

Provide a sunny corner and a shady corner

Cat in summer

The cat loves to sunbathe. Even if I don't go outside I recommend reserving that area of the house where direct light enters to put a towel there for example so that you can lie down. On the other hand, if what happens is that we have a garden and the furry one enjoys being there during the summer, we should put an umbrella -no kidding- in some corner, or plant tall plants that provide shade.

Thus, both we and our furry can enjoy the summer without problems 🙂.
