How to say goodbye to my cat

Old cat with his human

The cat, as much as it hurts, has a much shorter life expectancy than ours. Hopefully, you can live 20, 25, maybe 30 years, but no more. From the age of 10, it can show symptoms of any disease typical of old age, such as pain in its legs, hearing loss, or muscle weakness.

From the first moment that the animal enters the house, we have to be aware of this in order to make the most of every moment, every second that we are with him. Thus, we will not only give him a happy life, but he will also give us the best years of our life. But, How to say goodbye to my cat? It is not easy at all, but we will try to help you.

Having a cat at home is having a friend, a companion, someone who gives you a lot of love and fun, moments of tenderness and trust that soften your heart and make you see that life can be very beautiful. When it comes time to say goodbye, it is very difficult.

A thousand and one questions may arise in our minds: why does he have to leave? Am I doing the right thing? Can he really not live longer?, ... It is very possible that we notice a huge emptiness in the chest, as if a part of us was being ripped away. It can be a very, very hard time.

But we have to face it and move on. How? The most important is talk to someone about it, either family and / or friends. We need someone to at least listen to us. Without judging, just let them be there.

During the last day of the cat's life, we have to do our best to make her as happy as possible. If we can, we will take him home where we will give him one last can (wet food) and a lot of love; and if we can't, we will do it anyway 😉. It is important to avoid seeing us cry, since the ideal is to see us well, calm down.

After euthanasia, we have to externalize emotions. It is not good to keep the tears or the pain for ourselves, we have to get it out. Regardless of how old we are, if we want to overcome it we will first have to vent. Cry. Scream if necessary. This is the best therapy we can give ourselves: listen to our body, and remove all pain that we feel.

Little by little, with the passage of days or weeks (each person needs their time. Let's not force the situation) We will be noticing that we are feeling something better.

Only when we have returned to our daily routine, when the wounds have healed, can we ask ourselves if we are ready or if we want to open the doors for another cat. But, I insist, you have to wait to get to this point, because each cat is unique and, therefore, irreplaceable.

Cats are animals that love each other very much. Saying goodbye to them is the most complicated thing we will probably ever do, but we have to know that we can always have the opportunity to host another furry.
