How to prevent obesity in cats?

Obese tabby cat

Obesity in cats is an increasingly common problem. Cats that spend the day doing nothing, cats that are overfed,… and human families that, often, have been accumulating stress, anxiety and / or depression for a long time.

And it is that although at first it may seem the opposite, our emotions, our rhythm and lifestyle, our personality, everything affects the furry that live with us. That is why I am going to offer you a series of tips on how to prevent obesity in these animals.

Leave the trough full

I know. It may seem ironic, but keep in mind that cats are animals that eat a little 4-6 times a day. Imposing us a schedule causes them a lot of anxiety, which makes them eat more than they really want.

In the event that we have obese cats, we will speak with the veterinarian to tell us how much we should add so that their health is not in danger, since the recommended amounts specified on the containers are for cats that have an appropriate weight for their age and size. .

Play, play and play with them

I will not get tired of saying it. Cats need to move, play, burn all the energy they accumulate throughout the day. Don't you want your cats to be obese or sad either? Take your time! A simple ball of aluminum foil or a rod with string will do to keep them entertained three times a day for at least 15 minutes..

Be careful: the first thing is not to hurt them. I mean, if they are already very obese to the point that they can barely move, what you have to do is see that they lose weight just by controlling what they eat. Then we will "force" them to do physical exercise.

Make them a gym

I'm going to appropriate a term that a well-known cat educator has made famous: kitification. What does that mean? Adapt the house to the cats that live in it. Make them a kind of gym. Put shelves at different heights, scratching trees, tunnels, ... with the aim not only that they exercise, but also so that they feel good.

These cats like to be on high surfaces. Take advantage of this to direct them to the aforementioned with a cat rod. In this way, you will be able to control your weight.
