How many times should a cat go to the bathroom

Cats must go to the litter box several times a day

El Sandbox is one of the accessories that your cat cannot miss- You will use it every time you need to urinate or defecate. It is essential that we put him in a quiet room, since otherwise he could become very nervous and, therefore, he would end up relieving himself in inappropriate places in the house.

In addition, it is important that we control the times that you go to your private toilet, because if you go more, or less than usual, you may need veterinary help. Therefore, I am going to tell you how many times should a cat go to the bathroom.

How much food and water does a healthy cat need?

The healthy cat will go about 4 times to urinate and about 2 to defecate a day

If we see that the sand is wet, dirty, it is a good sign ... or is it? The truth is depends. It depends on the type of food that is given, on the season of the year in which we are, and on the animal's own health. For example, if it is given wet feed, it will urinate more times than if it is given dry feed, since the former has a high percentage of water (around 60-70%) while the latter has low water (around 40%).

To know how much you should go to the bathroom, then, we have to first find out how much you drink and / or eat:

  • Water: in general, a healthy cat should drink 50ml for every kg of weight; that is, if you weigh 4kg, you should drink 200ml of water / day.
  • Food: the one indicated on the sack or can of feed. Normally, a 2,5-3kg adult cat should eat between 70 grams of dry feed, or about 400 grams of wet feed.

So how do you know if you are going to the bathroom? Very easy: filling a measuring glass with the water you should drink daily, and pour it into your drinking fountain in the morning. The next day, pour the remaining water into the measuring glass, and subtract that amount from the one that has been drunk. For example, if we have added 200ml, but the next morning we see that it has left 50ml, then the animal has drunk 150ml; that is to say, 50ml less than its share.

If that happens, the cat's health may be weakening. For this reason, It is important to note if her eyes have sunk a bit, or if her gums are pale and dry. If he shows any of these symptoms, you should go to the vet.

How many times does a cat relieve itself?

Well again depends 🙂. To give you an idea, mine, who eat dry feed and drink the amount of water they need for their weight, will urinate 4-6 times a day and defecate about 2 times.

In any case, the number of times they go is not as important as the amount they eliminate; that is, they can go more or less times, but ideally they should eliminate about 40ml / kg of urine per day and defecate at least once / day.

When to worry?

The litter must be clean for the cat to use it

Doing your business on a daily basis is very important, since it keeps the body free of toxins and others that not only do not need but could also harm you if you keep them inside the body. But the cat is an animal that knows well how to feign pain, and if we are not very aware it is likely that we will not realize that something is wrong until the problem has advanced a lot.

To avoid this, you have to know that the reasons to worry are the following:

  • He goes to the sandbox many times, but he can't do anything. Perhaps some droplets of urine (which could be a sign of stones or cystitis for example), or perhaps very small, hard ball-shaped stools (constipation).
  • Urine excessively, perhaps from kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, cancer, or diabetes.
  • Drink a lot of water. If the cat drinks more than 45ml / kg per day, the cause must be found out.
  • Have diarrhea. It may be due to a sudden change in diet, or because you are sick (with the flu or parasites, for example).
  • Relieves out of the litter tray. This may be due to the litter box being in a busy room, poor hygiene, stress, or something more serious, such as a urinary tract disease.

What is normal cat stool like?

The excrement of a healthy cat, which is being fed with a quality food and without grains or by-products, they have to be hard but not excessively dark brown, but not black. In addition, if we compare its smell with that of a cat that eats low-quality feed, it does not smell so much or so bad; And that's not to mention the size, which is considerably smaller.

My cat poops a lot, why?

If you go to the litter box more than twice to defecate, it is most likely due to the food that is given to you. The feeds that contain cereals and by-products have a lower digestibility, which means that the body actually takes very little of each kibble; moreover, cereals (oats, wheat, barley, rice, etc.) harm it, since it is not able to digest them as it does not need them.

For this reason, it is normal for a cat that eats one like this to go to the litter box a lot, as it is the only way it has to get rid of what is not useful to it.

Now, if the stool starts to be soft, then we would be talking about a possible parasitic disease or a sudden change in diet. In the first case, he should be treated with an internal antiparasitic (either a pill or syrup), and in the second he should be mixing his old food with the new one, adding less and less of the old one.

My cat pees once a day, why?

If the cat urinates once a day but eliminates the amount that is due, that is, its 40ml / kg, there is no problem. But if not, then you have to take him to the vet as soon as possible since it could have or a simple problem with the litter box (for not liking the place where it is, or the sand) or a kidney problem.

The specialist will do a series of tests, such as urine and blood tests, and / or an ultrasound to determine the cause and begin treatment. If the case is serious, I would put a catheter to empty your bladder.

The litter box is a very important accessory for the cat

    Hello Monica.
The article is incomplete or incorrect:
The title is "How many times should the cat go to the bathroom",
but you only talk about how much water they should drink per day,
not to mention the bathroom issue later.

You are right. It is already updated 🙂

Hello, I'm sorry but the point is that I found a kitten a few days ago on the street, what happens is that I have been with her for three days and in these three days she has pooped once, I don't know what to do, the only time I can take her to the vet will be in three more days please help I don't know what to do, I don't want anything to happen to her.

She must be only a month old, because she is very small and does not know how to do anything, go to the bathroom, nothing, I don't know what to do please help, try that to stimulate her but her anus is like swollen, I try to find what it could be but it does not appear nothing.

      Hello Camila.
It is normal that what happens to your kitten. One of my cats, who was also bottle-fed, did not relieve herself 'solid' every day, but every 3-4 days.

You have to massage her tummy, with little pressure, and in rotating movements. From top to bottom. Then you have to stimulate the anus with a gauze or similar moistened in warm water.

If she doesn't, then take her to the vet as she might need a catheter.

I hope it gets better. Greetings!

        Hello Monica! Very good article.
I have a two-month-old kitten, he started to poop soft and greenish, so I gave him an antiparasitic but he continued the same, for which I gave him a medicine for infections caused by parasites.
However, he continues to poop about six times a day and the color and texture are the same, even the poop comes out on its own sometimes but he is in good spirits, plays, baby, and eats normally.
        What should I do?

          Hello Ariana.

First of all, I recommend you take him to the vet. Do not self-medicate a cat, as it can be counterproductive.

In any case, if you lead a normal life, you will surely be fine.

          Greetings.

My kitten is a month and a half, I do not know if it is normal for her to do the body 3 or 4 times a day and to get up at dawn to urinate, is it possible that she is eating more than usual or will it be because of the change from breast milk to dry feed ?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Sara.

How is she? That is, does he lead a normal life, run, play, etc.?
In principle, if you see her well and happy, nothing bad has to happen to her.

But if you have doubts, we recommend you consult a veterinarian.

      Greetings.

Monica, hello I have a question. My cat is urinating 1 time a day, she does not want to drink water, she is reactive, eats, plays, walks around the house, but I am worried that she will not urinate. She is 7 years old, she is a HAVANA.
    THANK YOU ?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Jaia.

And do you drink water? It is that you may have a urinary infection. It can be known to be safe with a urinalysis, and it is treated with medications prescribed by a veterinarian.

      Cheer up.

Hello, it's a question, a kitten came to my house 4 days ago, very skinny, I'm feeding her and giving her a drink, but she poops 3 times a day, is it normal?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Liz.

It depends on how your stools are 🙂
If they are very soft, like diarrhea, no, it is not normal.
But if they are shaped and brown or dark brown in color, then yes.

In any case, when in doubt it is best to take a sample to the vet. Greetings!
