Can cats lose their voice?

Meowing cat

The meow is a sound that all of us who live with cats hope to hear more than once throughout the furry's life, since it is also a form of communication that they use from time to time to make us understand what they want or are looking for. something.

Now, sometimes it can happen that they start to meow less, and that is when we wonder if cats can lose their voice. So If you have doubts, then I will try to solve them.

Can they lose their voice?

Yes of course. An illness, trauma, or even being cold can be the cause of occasional or permanent loss of voice. There are some who are even born without being able to meow well; that is, they open their mouths and only air is heard, like a whisper; and others who have very, very short, high-pitched meows (like my cat Keisha, for example).

As there are several reasons, it is important to know if something has happened to the feline to correct it. But how do you know?

Find out if he has lost his voice

The easiest way to tell is by observing the animal: if he lives completely normal, that is, if he plays, runs, sleeps ... all good, and what has happened is that his meows sound a bit looser, in principle there is nothing to worry about since he may only have his larynx a little irritated. This irritation is usually due to the cold, so it is important to give it water at room temperature, not let it go out in winter -at least, not if we know that it is cold-, and in the event that we bathe it or it has gotten wet, dry it consciously.

Another reason for loss of voice is stress. If we take into account that the cat is a very sensitive furry one, to which noise, tension and others make him feel very bad, it may happen that he stops meowing in these situations. But when everything is back to normal, it should be smooth again. Although, in any case, we recommend avoiding this happening to him, simply taking care of him as he deserves: with respect, patience and affection.

If the aphonia lasts more than three days, go to the vet

Cat at the vet

When the loss of voice lasts more than three days, then you have to start thinking that the cat is sick or has ingested something that has caused irritation in the larynx. For this reason, we must take him to the vet for an examination and treatment in order to improve.

I hope it has been useful to you 🙂.
