Calm signals from cats

Adult bicolor cat

Cats are generally peaceful. They only get a little nervous in mating season, when there is a female nearby looking for a mate with whom to have offspring, or when they have the need to protect their territory or their own life.

If you live with one of them, he can send you a series of messages if he considers it appropriate to try to relax you. But, What are the calm signs of cats?

In 2004, the canine trainer Turid Rugaas began to talk about the signs of calm that dogs show so that coexistence would be harmonious for everyone. These signs were described in his book »The language of dogs. Signs of calm. After reading it I began to realize that cats also had their own signalsWhich in a way was logical: how else can they avoid unnecessary fights? Or how else could they tell a kitten to calm down in a polite way?

For this reason, and although I am by no means an expert on the subject, I have come to observe these signs of calm in cats:

Number 1 - licks his nose

Cat with tongue sticking out

They tend to do this a lot when, for example, an adult cat is sleeping peacefully and a kitten deliberately walks over it with the intention of playing with it.. They can also do it if we surprise them, we take them in our arms and we give them many kisses.

Number 2 - Squint

This is a message that has two meanings: one of them is "I trust you", and the other is "calm, nothing happens". When do they do it? Well, although it is curious, They can do it if they are very respectful and social cats to a cat or kitten -especially a kitten- that we just brought home and it is very scared.

Number 3 - Turns on his back

When a cat is turned on its back, it is in a position that could be very dangerous, as it can barely defend itself. If he lies on his back it is a way of saying to the person in front of him that he recognizes that he does not want fights. Be careful, it should not be confused as an invitation to play: in this one, it will have a special look (like that of a small child who has the intention of doing some mischief), while in the other it may have narrowed eyes.

Number 4 - Puts its tail under the paws

If the cat puts its tail under its paws, it is because it is afraid and tries by all means to make the cause of this feeling move away or relax. For example, if a person does nothing but annoy it, the cat will put its tail between its legs.

Number 5 - Yawn

Yawning cat

Yawning. Who does not relax? 🙂 It is the signal of calm that goes more unnoticed, not in vain, they do it or when they are very sleepy or when they finish getting up. And they spend up to 18pm sleeping, so ... if you think this is not a sign of calm, I understand, but yes, it is.

Let's take the example of the adult cat with the kitten again. The little one wants to play, but the adult doesn't feel like it; however, the kitten becomes very insistent, so that the adult cat yawns. If effect takes place, the furry will calm down, and if not, it will walk away.

Do you know any other signs of calm?
