My cat sleeps a lot, why?

Cat with glasses sleeping

A healthy cat spends many hours sleeping; so much so that if it is a puppy it can be ironing the ear around 18pm daily, while if you are an adult you will spend around 16pm in your bed. It is undoubtedly a long time, but this has its reason for being: it turns out that all predatory animals rest as many hours as they can, since This way they will have all the energy they need to be able to have a good chance of hunting their prey the first time., and if they don't succeed, they will still have the strength to try again.

But sometimes we find ourselves in the situation where our friend rests more than normal, and that is when we have to worry and find out why. So let's find out why does my cat sleep a lot, and how we have to proceed in each case.

The cat is bored

Yawning cat

There are many people who work outside the home, and many who do not return home for 10 hours, sometimes more. What is your cat doing in the meantime? Indeed: sleep. This would not be a problem if that person later began to play with their furry, something that does not always happen. Thus, the animal ends up so bored that, since it has nothing better to do, is in his bed a long timeEither looking at the scenery or simply sleeping.

It's a shame to have such a cat. It is logical that after working you want to rest, but in stores you can find infinity of toys With which both the furry and the human will have a great time, such as feather dusters, laser pointers, ropes ... that can be used while sitting on the sofa.

The cat is hot or cold

Both in winter and summer the cat is much less activeespecially if it is very hot or very cold. It may seem somewhat illogical, since at the end of the day, we are talking about an animal whose origin is in the deserts, but our friend in particular may not withstand neither high nor low temperatures. So while the temperatures get nice, the furry will most likely spend his time sleeping.

During the summer you can even lie on the ground, since it is much cooler than your bed; in winter, on the contrary, he can choose to get under your blankets, if you make it clear 🙂; and if you also leave it sleep with youis will snuggle up next to you to protect yourself even more from the cold.

The cat is very young or very old

As we mentioned at the beginning, kittens from 0 to 1 year old can be passed 18 hours sleeping, they can even arrive at 20pm. Your little body needs all the energy available to grow strong and healthy, and fast too. To do this, he has to eat in the best possible way, play so that his muscles are strengthened, and above all sleep to recharge batteries.

Adult cats, aged 1 to 10 years, sleep an average of 16 h. They continue to grow up to 2 years (or 2,5-3 if they will be large or very large breeds), but thereafter growth stops. Still, they are very active, but not as active as when they were puppies, so they no longer need as much energy as when they were precious little balls of hair.

Older cats, from the age of 10, as time goes by, their body wears out, it gets old. They can begin to have diseases of the third age, such as joint problems (arthritis, osteoarthritis), cataracts, gingivitis, etc. We will see, then, that little by little spend more time resting than staying active.

The cat is sick

If you are in weak health, you will rest as much as you can ... and more. I'll tell you something: one of my cats, Susty, years ago had a pretty serious gastrointestinal illness, to the point that as soon as she sat down she stained the floor, or wherever she was sitting. She is a very active cat, who likes to go out for a walk and play. But not during those days.

During the time she was ill, she did not move from her bed at all. And it was like that for a week. He was pretty bad 🙁, although in the end with antibiotics and a soft diet he managed to recover. So if you suspect something is wrong with your friend, feel free to take him to the vet.

These are the most common symptoms in sick cats: apathy, fever (rectal temperature higher than 38,9ºC), vomiting, Diarrhea, loss of appetite and / or weight, seizures,… and anything else you see that is not normal, even if it is a simple detail (for example, that one day, instead of having breakfast, he sits looking at the trough).

The cat is hyperactive

Depending on the level of activity you do, you can also spend many hours sleeping. So much so that a cat that is naturally hyperactive will stay in bed for a long time until you have rested. So if your friend sees that one day he is running around the house nonstop during the morning, and then he spends the whole afternoon in his bed, don't worry 🙂.

Tabby cat sleeping

As you can see, a cat can sleep a lot for several reasons; Most of the time for reasons they do not have to alarm us, but I insist, as soon as you notice that something is not right with your furry, take it to a professional to examine it.
