What to do if my cat does not want to eat kibble

Kittens eating feed

There are cats that are very delicate with food, so much so that they can force us to buy different brands of feed until we find one that they really like. Many of us have wondered more than once what to do if my cat does not want to eat croquettes, and of course, you must eat every day so that your health is good. If more than 3 days go by and you don't eat anything, your body will start to get sick.

To avoid this, I am going to tell you why this happens, and what can be done to make him eat.

Why doesn't my cat want to eat her kibble?

There can be several reasons why the furry does not want to eat. In most cases it is simply because they do not like the taste, but sometimes it can be because of something much more serious, such as oral problems, discomfort or stomach pain, etc. So how to distinguish a serious cause from another that is not? Noting what symptoms you have.

In the event that he has a disease, you will see that he is apathetic, that he spends the day lying in a corner. You may have vomiting, diarrhea, bad breath, drink much more water than normal, have seizures or dizziness, among others. When it is suspected that the animal is not well, it is essential to take him to the vet for you to examine.

But if the cat is fine, then you will have a cat who is very special with food 🙂.

What to do to make him eat?

It will depend on the cause. If he is ill, with veterinary treatment he will improve little by little and it is normal that he will return to his appetite in a matter of a few hours to a day after he has been treated. Still, regardless of what happens to him, at home you can do several things to get him to eat:

Cat on the terrace

With this, any cat should leave the feeder clean 😉.

My cat is a month and a half old, I arrived at our house a week ago, I gave her croquettes the first days but I saw she ate them with difficulty but she ate them, I offered her a little wet food and she no longer likes croquettes only the wet food to the croquettes no longer comes near or smells them, how to make him eat them again

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Edith.
I recommend you mix the wet food with the feed. The first few times put a lot of wet food, and gradually add less.
This way he will get used to the feed again.
      A greeting.

My cat does not want to eat the croquette, he only wants pure souffle and there are already two sacks of food that he leaves me, I feel that he is lazy to chew ... I already bought him whiskeys and cat chaow ... But he likes nothing ....

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Yanet.
Try mixing the souffle with the croquettes. The first days put much more souffle than croquettes, and little by little the amount decreases.
Another option is to try giving him another type of feed. The ones you mention have a lot of cereal and little meat. If possible, I would recommend giving you Applaws, Taste of the Wild, Acana, Orijen… They are more expensive, but as you carry more meat you need less quantity to fill up, so in the end they come out almost the same.
      A greeting.

    Hello
Three months ago my kitten gave birth to three kittens, I gave the female a gift and I stayed with the males, one of them likes cookies and the other just looked at her and left, but they both kept sucking
To cut that, I decided to take añ that he does not like the cookie where my grandmother so that he can learn to eat it since he would not have his mother
But it's been a week and he doesn't want the cookies, he only eats meat and milk
I don't know what to do

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Gianella.
I recommend you mix the meat with the croquettes. Go adding less and less meat until he gets used to the croquettes.
Another option would be to give him wet cat food, and the same, mix it with the croquettes.

You have to be patient, but in the end you will surely get used to it.

      A greeting.

Hello, I have a problem with my cat, he got sick and since there he does not want to eat his croquettes, he only consumes chicken, liver, tuna. But no croquettes

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Evelin.
You can soak the croquettes with homemade chicken broth, or even make a mixture of croquettes and chicken with liver. Put more chicken and liver at the beginning so that it gets used to it little by little. You may need to mash the croquettes a bit.
And patience. There is no other hehe 🙂
      A greeting.

      Hi Mimi.
Don't worry: my cats don't clean it either. It is normal.

Good afternoon, my 7-year-old cat has kidney problems apart from irritation in the gums (the irritation is more on the left side, he eats more on the right side). The kidney problem is chronic, he has already been hospitalized and has lowered a creatinine point that was at 4.3, before he took him to the vet he ate normally, I was close to him to see that he eats, but now that he has left his hospitalization , already a week ago, everything is exquisite, before I used to love him and he ate more than what he eats now, I even bought him Ricocat of pate he only ate one day, the next day he did not want to, he has been eating his k / d in little balls (not much), but it gets harder and harder. My fear is that he will relapse again, the good thing is that he drinks a lot of water, but when I admitted him it was because he did not pass stools and the Doc told me that he has to be well fed and hydrated. I can't even force him to eat much, even with a syringe, because I hit his gums, how complicated! How many times does a cat have to eat a day? I give it a handful of feed three times a day and still leave it to regulate, in each portion it will "sting" 10 times and it is not to grab a lot but a few balls.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Roxana.
A healthy cat eats between 3 and 5 times a day, an average of 200g every 24 hours (depending on age and weight).
Try soaking it in water or milk (lactose-free or pasteurized).
      Cheer up.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Omar.
Have you tried mixing it with a little lactose-free or goat's milk?
If he still doesn't want to, I would recommend taking him to the vet to see if he has a problem in his mouth.
      A greeting.

Good afternoon, I have two two-year-old cats, they hardly eat and they do not like croquettes alone, they only eat scrambled with tuna but not much sometimes I get to work and there is all the food that I leave them in the morning the vet says that they are handy for food I give them adult BALANCE croquettes and FANCY FEAST tuna. I don't know if there is any brand as richer. I'm worried they're skinny, what do I do ???

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Nora Cecilia.
The best cat food is one that does not contain grains or by-products.
I don't know those brands, sorry.

Anyway, try soaking their food with lactose-free milk. Most likely they will eat more this way.

      A greeting.

My cat is used to eating only meat or chicken and when she eats biscuit (sometimes forced) after a while she vomits it, would you know what she has?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Juan Diego.
From what you count, he just doesn't want to eat kibble.
If you can give it meat, all the better. If not, go mixing it with the croquettes, adding less and less meat. But don't force her to eat just one thing because she might stop eating.
      A greeting.

Hello, I have 2 cats, the one we had first almost 2 years old, we give them reduced-calorie kibbles because they are prone to getting fat and a month ago we brought an 8-month-old kitten, the problem is that the kitten is smaller and thinner and We give him different Nupec brand food for house cats, but he seems to dislike it, whenever he can, he stops eating his food to eat my larger cat's reduced calorie food.
Is there a way to make him like his or what kind of food should we give him? I don't think we should give him the same ones my other cat eats.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Alejandra.

I recommend giving them both a feed that does not have cereals. I don't know if these brands are in your area, but they are highly recommended:

      True Instinct
      Acana
      Origin
      Applaws
      Taste of the Wild
      I nourish

These brands make feed for sterilized cats or cats predisposed to getting fat, and also for kittens.

To ensure that they do not eat the two of the other's plate, you can try to get them used to eating in separate rooms, between 4 and 6 times a day.

      Greetings.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Karen.

We recommend contacting a veterinarian, as they may indeed have something in their mouth that is bothering or hurting them.

      We hope it improves. Greetings.

My kitten is 6 months old and since she was 4 she no longer wants to eat croquettes, only sachets and cans, what can I do?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Laura.

You can try mixing the feed with chicken or fish broth, so that it feels more attracted to the smell. Or mix a can with a little feed, and gradually add less can as you get used to it.

      Greetings.

Hi, I just adopted a kitten around two months old (could be younger) and tried to give him kibbles but he refuses to eat them, he just eats some chicken and the cat food packets and these cause him some problems when going to the bathroom. What can I do to convince him to eat croquettes? Even when I combine them with the souffle, he does not want to go near the plate.
And another question, at that age should they still drink milk if I suspect that he was separated from his mother? Is cow's milk recommended for a kitten?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Diane.

Cow's milk is harmful to kittens as they cannot digest lactose. It is best to give him milk purchased at a veterinary clinic, or animal supply store, specifically for cats.

To start eating solids, it is preferable to start by giving him wet food, that is, cans, either pate or pieces in sauce, for kittens. You take a little bit with your fingers, and you put it in softly in the mouth.

You may not eat kibble yet because your teeth have not developed enough yet. Give it time.

      Greetings.

I have a 9-month-old kitten, I was giving her a feed that did not have much animal protein, she had vegetable protein, she liked, but I found out about a feed that has more protein of animal origin, it has fish, salmon, chicken, I changed to that feed, but He does not like the feed. It has a very strong smell, what can I do, should I leave him with the old feed or how can I make him like the new feed.

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Caroline.

You have to mix both for a month, putting less and less of the "old" feed and more and more of the "new".
You can also try soaking the new one in lactose-free milk.

      Greetings.

Hello, good afternoon, my cat has problems eating his croquettes, every time he eats he starts with his mouth to act as if he was stuck, as if he had something in his throat, he eats wet food but the same thing already mentioned above happens. What can be???

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Alejandro.

Perhaps it would be advisable to contact a veterinarian, since it may be that he has a problem in his mouth that prevents him from eating normally.

      Regards!

Hello? ‍♀️ my problem with my 2 cats, a 6-year-old female and a 4-year-old male, both sterilized, they don't want croquettes, only sachet food, even though I stir them they don't eat it. Is it good to give them only wet food? Or what croquettes do you recommend? I bought the ones in the supermarket.
    I live in mexico.
    Thank you!!

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Adriana.
You can give him wet food without problem. In any case, we recommend not giving them any that contain cereals.

Hello, my cat, since she was born, has eaten only meat and human food, I have taken her to the vet and he told me that she should eat croquette because she won't have many problems but she has not eaten croquette and she is not interested in what he could do to make her eat it. ?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Mario.

If you can, ask for a complete blood test. It is that if it is well, it does not make sense to give it something else.

It is better to eat meat and food suitable for humans than croquettes, which are often rich in cereals that will do nothing good to an animal that is a carnivore.

      Greetings.

I have 2 cats, both 3 and a half years old, a female and a male

The cat eats croquettes and any type of meat that you give it without problems.

The cat eats croquettes and very rarely meat. I would like him to eat in a more diverse way

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi Xander.

Cats are animals of habit. If the cat does not like to eat meat, do not force it. What you can do is mix the food, and gradually add less croquettes and more meat.

But if you don't want to or don't like it, you'd better keep eating croquettes.

      Greetings.

I have two kittens and they no longer want their kibbles if there is something on the table they steal to eat they have even gotten to garbage, they always ask for food but croquettes do not want, I do not know if the problem was that they stopped seeing me for more than a month and Now I came back I did it but with a newborn baby, they do not look at him or touch him because he has pulmonary dysplasia, he is on oxygen. I do not know if this situation. I cause them stress

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hello Rosario.

It may have been because of what the arrival of the baby to the family (by the way, we hope the little one will get better soon) has meant them in their lives. That is, surely they have felt the stress, the tension, all those feelings that the family has had and / or has. And of course, all that tension and worry will have stressed them too, since they are very sensitive to the emotions of others.

To do? Well ... you have to start with humans. If humans are calm and relaxed, it is to be expected that cats will gradually understand that nothing bad happens to them. Meditation, walks, breathing exercises, relaxing music. Find something that you like to do, that relaxes you.

And in those moments that you feel good, calm, then it is when it is advisable to play with the cats so that they also discharge that tension.

You have to be very patient, and do not expect changes overnight because that is not going to happen. But being constant little by little they will calm down.

      Luck.

He does not want to eat his kibble, he is vomiting and he is sleeping all the time and I do not know why he does not play and he does not have diarrhea, my kitten only wants to sleep what can I do so that he is still a kitten healthy and like the other normal kittens that play and stuff ... What can I do?

    1.    Monica sanchez said

      Hi JE

How old is your cat? The normal thing for a healthy kitten is to sleep about 18-20 hours a day, which is divided into small naps throughout the day and night.

But if in addition to sleeping a lot he does not eat or play, then you have to take him to the vet.

      Greetings.
